Danish Mid Century Teak Sofa & Armchair Set by Grete Jalk

SKU: LLSG5

A rare and beautifully restored Danish Mid-Century lounge set, designed by the legendary Grete Jalk for France & Daverkosen, Denmark, circa 1960s. This set includes a three-seater sofa and two matching armchairs, crafted with exceptional attention to detail and a timeless sense of style.

Design & Craftsmanship
Each piece features a solid teak frame with elegantly curved armrests and tapered legs, reflecting the refined minimalism of Scandinavian modern design. The teak has been professionally treated with premium Danish oils, enhancing the grain while preserving the wood’s natural warmth and longevity.

A standout feature of this set is the spring wire seat support system, a rare design detail that offers both superior comfort and long-term durability – a true innovation in mid-century seating.

Upholstery
The set has been newly upholstered in luxurious yellow velvet, a bold and stylish contrast to the rich teak frames. The cushions are generously padded and button-tufted, staying true to the original design while delivering contemporary comfort and elegance.

France & Daverkosen, later known as France & Søn, was a pioneering Danish furniture manufacturer renowned for its significant contributions to mid-century modern design. The company was established in 1936 as a collaboration between British businessman Charles William Fearnley France and Danish cabinetmaker Eric Daverkosen. Initially focusing on mattress production, the company shifted its attention to furniture design and manufacturing after World War II. Following Daverkosen's death in 1937 and France's experiences as a prisoner of war during the conflict, the company resumed operations, emphasizing innovative design and mass production techniques .

In 1957, Charles France's son, James France, joined the company, prompting a rebranding to France & Søn. The firm became known for collaborating with prominent designers such as Finn Juhl, Grete Jalk, Ole Wanscher, and Peter Hvidt & Orla Mølgaard-Nielsen. These partnerships led to the creation of iconic pieces that combined aesthetic appeal with functional design. Notably, the company developed a revolutionary technique for machining teak wood, a material previously considered challenging for mass production, which allowed for the efficient manufacturing of high-quality furniture .

France & Søn's commitment to quality and innovation contributed to its success, with the company accounting for a significant portion of Danish furniture exports during the 1950s. In 1967, the company was sold to Danish designer Poul Cadovius and subsequently operated under the name CADO before eventually ceasing operations in the late 1970s .
