Rare Rolf Benz Sculptural Lounge Suite in Blue Leather, Germany, 1970s
Price per chair. Four available.
An exceptional 1970s lounge suite by Rolf Benz, upholstered in beautifully soft genuine blue leather.
The design is all about comfort: deep, generously padded seats, dramatic wing-like sides and an enveloping, almost cocoon-like shape. The sculptural backs make the pieces particularly striking from every angle and ideal for open-plan interiors.
The design inevitably recalls Michel Ducaroy’s famous Togo, introduced by Ligne Roset in 1973. This is not a Togo, but it belongs to the same exciting period of 1970s European design, when low-level, heavily cushioned and informal seating transformed the way living rooms were designed.
A particularly distinctive detail is the small black spherical castors at the rear, contrasting beautifully with the substantial upholstered form.
Finished in high-quality genuine blue leather, the suite has developed a wonderful natural patina, with subtle tonal variations and creasing that add character. The deep blue is also a far less common alternative to the typical brown, cognac and black leather of the period.
A rare and highly characterful Rolf Benz suite combining German design, exceptional comfort and unmistakable 1970s style.
