Prof. Karl Nothelfer (1900–1980) hailed from a long line of master craftsmen in Überlingen, Germany. Trained in architecture and furniture design, he became internationally respected through his academic and practical work. In the 1950s, he developed the innovative skid-base chair, impacting modern chair design globally.
